A sketchbook is a place to practice ideas, test techniques, and keep a visual record of your progress. The best sketchbook is the one you will actually use.
Paper weight For dry media such as graphite and colored pencil, ordinary drawing paper can work well. If you plan to use watercolor, choose a sketchbook designed for wet media.
Smooth or textured? Smooth paper is useful for clean pencil details and line art. Textured paper can give graphite and colored media a different surface effect.
Size A small sketchbook is easy to carry for quick studies. A larger one gives you more room for landscapes and detailed drawings.
Binding Spiral-bound books can lie flatter on a table. Hardbound books can feel more protective when carried around.
Page count If you are practicing daily, a higher page count can be convenient. If you prefer finished drawings, a smaller book may be enough.
My simple rule Choose your sketchbook based on your main medium, drawing size, and where you normally draw. You do not need the most expensive option.
